JEWELLERY DESIGNER TO WATCH: SABINE ROEMER, LONDON

I interviewed talented Sabine Roemer at her Knightsbridge studio. Sabine is known for working with high-profile clients on bespoke high jewellery commissions, charity collaborations and artistic sculpture. She has mastered a wide range of jewellery-making techniques, including stone cutting, carving, stone setting and design at Germany’s Pforzheim Goldsmith and Watchmaker School. She actually creates jewellery with her own hands! She is a true craftswoman. Her first impressive projects included custom-made jewellery designs at the Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix, followed by creating Trend Vision pieces for Swarovski and collaboration with the Nelson Mandela foundation after meeting the former-president Bill Clinton in South Africa.

In the morning…the Best thing is to do a session of yoga with Steward or to go for a run in Hyde Park.

Born, Lived, Based… Germany – all over the world – London.

Grace Kelly or Grace Jones… Grace Jones after meeting her at Wimbledon we shared a lot of laughters since then in the rain.

Start designing jewellery after… I walked into a goldsmith’s workshop at the age of fifteen and I started making jewellery ever since… I found my vocation!

Inspiration comes from… Travelling, Nature, People, Architecture, … I think you just have to open your eyes as it is everywhere.

The art of jewellery… Is a beautiful craft. I still find it is very mysterious to people how actual hands create such small and intricate pieces to form precious materials and gemstones into heirlooms telling stories.

Sabine Roemer

Fashion role in your creativity… of course fashion influences certain segments of the jewellery market as most customers want to wear fashion jewellery pieces with whatever is in fashion at the moment. Fine jewellery however is an art form by itself which doesn’t have to follow any other trends.

Success is… different for everyone. For me to be able to create – be happy and have time for my family and friends.

Sabine Roemer

The biggest opposing force that you encountered on your creative journey…to keep my creativity alive and not become too commercial while handcrafting everything myself in the UK.

Next…  More sculptures and new creations. My bench is full with gemstones waiting to get a home.

Another big project for next year is to finish building a school in the Himalayas with my charitable project www.fromyouwithlove.com

Favourite cliché… Germans are always on time- It’s true I get nervous when I’m 5 minutes late.

Guilty pleasure…. Green&Black dark chocolate burned toffee

Tech must-haves…. the photography and video apps on my IPhone as all over sudden I don’t have to bug my brother for every little help- and I’m obsessed with Instagram.

Favourite fashion designers… I find Stella Mc Cartney very inspiring. Alexander Wang has great attention to details and The Row uses beautiful materials.

Artwork you most like in your living room…. actually I’m a big fan of sculptures, and I created a bronze Monkey Head for my husband’s birthday.

Books that changed your life… the Fountain Head- I felt finally understood.

One way ticket to…. California…. but I need two tickets please

Favourite cities… Rome, New York and Shanghai

Favourite hotels… normally I’m not a big fan of hotels but the NoMad in NY feels like you are coming home: cosy&warm.

Favourite gallery…The Guggenheim and the Tate Modern.

Favourite restaurants… our local italian Mediteraneo in Notting Hill and Sushi Kuu in Hong Kong.

Favourite boutiques… I always like to find small interesting boutiques like Deyrolle in Paris, CoutureLab in London and I love Museum Shops.

Later today… finishing a bespoke engagement ring for a lucky lady who will be very happy.
