GET THE LOOK: PERFUME – A SENSORY JOURNEY, SOMERSET HOUSE
At the private perfume workshop at Experimental Perfume Club, I learned that scent is a story. Just like a story, it has a beginning, middle and end. Just like a story, the beginning must draw you in with impact. The middle must have imagination and emotion; at the end must stay with you long after you’ve walked away. My sensory journey through contemporary scent at Perfume Exhibition in Somerset House inspired me to create my own “GEM” perfume, but also taught me that perfume is becoming a different kind of cultural experience; rather than being like a casual accessory, it is a key to express personality, mood, past and aspirations. Similar to jewellery, perfume takes on narrative, behaving less like an accessory. This multi-sensory exhibition runs until 23 September and features ten extraordinary perfumes and their pioneering creators, who have radically changed our perceptions of fragrance over the last 20 years! This exhibition will take you on a journey through a series of rooms designed to reflect the inspirations of the scents, from the Moroccan desert, a Catholic confessional, a water theme park to a lover’s boudoir. My favourite room is the scent of Paris in spring when lilacs bloom, an abstract interpreation of traditional floral scent. Made for Frederic Malle, the first perfume house to credit the perfumer on the bottle.
