GEM TALK WITH EKATERINA KUKHAREVA, FASHION DESIGNER
The series of interviews with women and men who have personalities, story to tell and their own GEM style. They make it happen for themselves all over the world and follow GEMOLOGUE by Liza Urla
Name: Ekaterina Kukhareva
Location: London, United Kingdom
Alma Mater: Central Saint Martin’s
Occupation: Fashion Designer
Ekaterina Kukhareva is a Ukrainian born and London based fashion designer. She is most known for her knitwear, colorful prints and enteral optimism coupled fashion like bravado. Her collection is sold everywhere from New York department stores to Italy and Saudi Arabia. Her sensual creations have been seen on many celebrities including Nicki Minaj and Charlotte Ross.
LOCATION AT TIME OF INTERVIEW: London is where I live and where I am based. The center of my universe. I love the areas where I live and work: Chelsea and Knightsbridge. Bar-Botanist on Sloane Square, Coffee shop- Megan’s on New King’s Road, Restaurant- Social on Pollen Street where the food is amazing and I recently mingled with Pippa Middleton there.
IN THE BEGINNING?: It is the influence of my grandma, who is also my role model. She used to do her own yarn and she created a lot of knitwear. Socks and little presents for the entire family. If I look back subconsciously it is where it all started. Later, I went to Central Saint Martins and for me knitwear was the most appealing in comparison with fabrics and prints. It is 3D it is not flat. I can feel it. I can play with it.
FASHION WEEK: It is a great work. It gives you an adrenaline rush. When you finish the show it is one of the best moments and sensations to have. It is really a weird feeling to explain. I really feel for those designers who do a lot of fashion shows because it is one of the hardest things to do in fashion world like to put together a collection and present it. I love to see people whom I don’t know wearing my clothes and styling them in their own way after my fashion shows!
INSPIRATIONS & CREATIVITY: I get my inspiration from everywhere from what I see, from what I hear, from people I meet, from my family, from my son. You cannot limit yourself. My son is seven. He styles himself in a way I would never dress him up. From the drawings what he does. Sometimes I give him a fashion croquis to draw so he can play around with it and he comes up with some design ideas. I think I can make a collection just on a basis of it.

COLOUR, SHAPE OR FUNCTIONALITY: Color. Each collection is really colourful. Colour is my passion and I always try to interpret it in my work. The feel, the touch and this is why I always use the best materials so the colour will stay. Functionality is also really important. If it is not functional you cannot really sell.
ICONS & INFLUENCES: Valentino. I really like his work, his approach. He is a legend. And sometimes you can see his references in my work. I create for the same kind of woman. Elegant, romantic, sexy and grown up.
TOPSHOP OR CHANEL: I do both! But if I go out I wear my own clothes. Shoes is my big problem! I don’t even know where to store them! I am obsessed about them this is why I decided to do my own collection. It is never enough and each season it is more and more shoes!
FIRST JEWELLERY: On my 16th birthday my Chopard earrings from my grand mother. She really pushes me and critisises a lot. For her it is a crime not iron clothes for example. She doesn’t leave her house without having her hair done and nails done. She loves jewellery sets.
JEWELLERY SETS: It is kitsch
MY EVERYDAY JEWELLERY: The engagement ring from Graff and my wedding band by Cartier. Cross by Cammilli, Watch by Chanel.
VINTAGE JEWELLERY: I really love vintage fashion jewellery. Like this Givenchy that I bought in a shop called Hirst Antiques on Portobello. I like statement pieces! They always stand out!
ROLEX OR CARTIER: Cartier! I prefer delicate or ceramic watches. Cartier and Chanel. And I like men watches. I cannot live without a watch! I have to always look at the time. I cannot have a day without a watch. I cannot go out without a watch! I always wear on the left hand. I write and create with my right.
PERFECT MAN’S WATCH: Breguet
THE FUTURE OF WATCHES: iWhatch and I will buy it for my son.
DREAM JEWELLERY/WATCH: The necklace I have seen on GEM-A-PORTER post by Chopard from the Haute Joaillerie collection featuring rubellite weighing 100 carat and a Bulgari snake watch as a special occasion bracelet.
FAVOURITE GALLERY & SHOP: Gallery- The Saatchi Gallery, Shop- Harrods
PERFECT GATEAWAY: Hampshire – Pebble beach, ?North of Spain- Hotel Maria Cristina in San Sebastian and Baden Baden – Brenners Park Hotel & SPA
COACHELLA OR BURNING MAN: Who does Burning Man?
POWER COMES FROM: Food! Pasta from Signor Sassi. Lobster spaghetti!
GIRLS POWER: Sexiness, mindset, style. With style you can do whatever you want!
