HOW TO FIND A WEDDING DRESS LAST MINUTE WITH RUTH MILLIAM BRIDAL

It doesn’t take me six months to decide on anything in my life: I can’t wait that long for anything! During Christmas, just before escaping to Rome, my fiancé and I made a last-minute decision to have our wedding ceremony for family in the Maldives on January 27th (wedding celebration to follow). I’m from the Far East of Russia and my fiance is Brazilian. We spent six months contemplating where we would get married. We couldn’t decide between Trancoso in Brazil or Tulum in Mexico, and we even considered Venice, the place we got engaged. Trancoso is a tricky place for holding a beach ceremony, as the tide is too high and the Nomade Hotel we had picked in Tulum doesn’t organise weddings. Since I was 20 years old my dream was to have a beach wedding and the most beautiful beach I have seen was in the Maldives. My dream wedding destination idea was shocking for my fiancé. He couldn’t get his head around getting married in a honeymoon location: What nonsense! Miraculously, I was able to change his mind… wink! wink!

Once we picked the place, we had to convince our families to travel over 20 hours from Far East Russia and Brazil. The only thing left for me was to find a wedding dress! Within a month! You might remember my visit to Emilia Wickstead, where I tried on several beautiful dresses, but you have to wait three to six months and I only had a few weeks!

But with my usual determination, I managed to find three bridal looks for my beach wedding ceremony, wedding breakfast the following day, and a wedding underwater lunch! I have searched the entire Internet and have seen every available white dress online, but I found my first bridal dress by Maria Lucia Hohan,, part of a stunning bridal collection at 202 boutique in Notting Hill. I also checked out the Wedding Club, where I tried on some beautiful gowns by designers like Berta, and Carolina Herrera. But there was no time to alter and dry clean the dresses I tried on. In the end, I picked a bridal overskirt by Katie May from LA on their sample sale, just to be on a safe side.

I cannot recommend enough the sample sale by Brides magazine at The Berkeley Hotel. It was a miracle because not only did I find my perfect wedding dress a week before my ceremony, but the wonderful Ruth Milliam  offered to alter it for me in five workings days! I had the chance to try on so many different styles of dresses so I could find exactly what I wanted that best suited my body shape. In reality, the first dress I tried on was one of those Wow! moments, the kind of thing you expect to feel from a wedding dress fit for a beach wedding. It was perfect. My girlfriend cancelled on me last minute, but my fiancé stepped in to give his opinion. I think he shared my Wow! moment, because he told Ruth it was the dress as I was still looking in the mirror contemplating! The dress we picked is a gorgeous Ruth Milliam Liliah 30’s style gown with feathery lace flowers and a low back, a champagne tulle skirt and a long flowing train. During my final fitting with Ruth Milliam, I had to try on some of her other stunning wedding creations that I just had to share with you below.

Let me first tell you a bit about this brilliant British designer. Ruth Milliam graduated with first class honours in Fashion Design before going to work for several International Fashion Houses across the globe. It was in Japan where she developed her skills and love for couture techniques. Her debut bridal collection introduced a whole new look for fashion forward thinking brides-to-be. Ruth is amazing and is with you every step of the way, offering advice on shapes, materials, beading, while taking down measurements and design notes.

Need a dress in less than three weeks? Follow my tips here to find the perfect wedding dresses and bridal gowns:

1 FIND YOUR PERFECT WHITE DRESS ONLINE

Even though I strongly advise against buying your wedding dress online, I do recommend considering dresses by fashion designers not known for creating bridal collections. Search for White Long Dress on sites like MATCHESFASHIONFarfetch, Net-A-Porter, MyTheresa

2 BUY YOUR DRESS IN MOSCOW  / NYC / ISRAEL

If you are running our of time, certain cities such as Moscow, NYC and Israel will sort our your bridal dress in no time at all. No need to wait over six months, just hop on a plane and find your perfect dress. The  lower price range will also surprise you.

3 CALL LONDON BRIDAL BOUTIQUES / DESIGNERS

I called bridal shops and designers in London to find out if they had my size dress available for purchase. Be mindful of the time you’ll need for dry cleaning and alterations. I don’t believe in miracles, so do not place an order without getting a quote for everything, including alterations.

4 ATTEND WEDDING SHOWS

London is a great place to be. You’re just one Google search away from the best wedding shows taking place monthly in central London. Pay for the ticket, it is worth it and I recommend to pay up for VIP treatment. My favourite wedding show is by Brides Magazine I attended at the Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge.

5 VISIT SAMPLE SALES

Sample sales are a tricky business, as you never know what you will find. Some bridal shops charge for an appointment like the Wedding Club, but Browns Bride host theirs at the old Vera Wang boutique opposite Claridge’s free of charge. I recommend asking what styles, sizeand quantity of dresses are available before attending.  How do you find a sample sale? Just Google wedding dress samples sale London and look for sales posted in the same month. Always bring a friend to help you browse through all the options.

6 CONSIDER RENTING A WEDDING DRESS

Depending on your style of wedding, renting could be an option for a wedding dress by a designer you set your mind on but which takes months to pre-order.

Ruth Milliam Bianca Gown: Champagne big tulle flowing skirt with delicate floral lace and plunge neck with gold detailed straps.
Ruth Milliam Tatiana Gown: Plunge neckline with delicate hand sewn gold leaf beading. Feather and crystal adornments with flowing tulle skirt.
